12 Good Foods to Eat to Increase Fertility

Getting pregnant is not easy for every couple. Some of us need to work hard to improve our fertility. Paying attention to the food you eat can play a role. What you consume daily can increase or decrease your chances at fertility, respectively. Here are a few of the foods which have been scientifically tested to increase fertility.

1. Whole grain products

Switch out your white bread or white rice for whole grain. It’s a way to give your body some carbs without getting all the carbs you get with the white, processed counterpart. Whole grain will also help regulate blood sugar and insulin. When insulin is produced at a healthy rate, hormone levels will be better balanced and fertility improves accordingly.

2. Plant-based protein

Instead of consuming meat-based protein only – and we’re not saying to eliminate all meat – receive protein from alternative sources such as those of plant origin. Any vegetable proteins are an excellent source. Beans and peas, in particular, are believed to be fertility-boosting foods. Proteins from meats are harder to digest which is why we recommend switching them out for veggie alternatives. The body uses too much energy to digest these proteins, resulting in unbalanced hormone levels.

3. Soy

Soy is a controversial food that we felt the need to include on this list. Soy is an excellent veggie protein alternative and in small quantities has been shown to increase fertility. In large quantities however, soy can have a negative effect on fertility. Doctors recommend adding only a small amount. Depending on weight and height, the recommended around of soy can vary. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea, speak about it with your family physician or consider other foods.

4. Milk

Milk and non-fat milk products are an amazing fertility booster. Don’t take this as permission to eat unlimited ice cream. That’s not what we mean. More than other milk products, milk and yogurt are recommended in particular. Consider drinking one glass of milk a day. Believe us when we say, it’ll help. The calcium in the milk will also be beneficial for the development of your baby.

5. Avocado

Avocado is filled with healthy fats and taste that’s useful for your health and fertility. These monosaturated fats will help to normalize the insulin levels in your body, regulating your hormone balance and increasing your chances of conception.

6. Apples, oranges, and bananas

Oranges are filled with vitamin C which is known to help boost fertility as well as help prevent against the flu. Apples contain potassium and calcium, and help normalize a person’s digestion. Bananas are also good for men and women alike, as the folic acid boosts fertility in both, is a preventative against fertility problems in males, and can help minimize PMS symptoms in women.

7. The right kind of fish

Fish is an excellent source of protein and vitamins. That said, some fish can be hazardous when consumed by a pregnant woman or by someone trying to conceive. That’s from the mercury which can stay in your body for up to a year after consumption. These are the fish you want to focus on – Atlantic salmon, shellfish, flatfish and flounder, haddock, Pollock, cod, and canned light tuna.

8. Fresh juices

Sadly, when it comes to drinks, a lot of things need to be excluded. No alcohol of any kind, including wine. Caffeine intake needs to be limited to roughly one caffeine-containing drink per day. Therefore, try to take in only water and fresh juices, such as those made from fruits and vegetables. Fresh juices like this are filled with vitamins and microelements which will help someone stay healthy and improve chances of conception.

9. Caffeine

Wait! Didn’t we just say caffeine was bad? For women, it is. For men, caffeine actually increases male cell motility when trying to conceive a child. So for men, caffeine is a recommendation for any couple trying to get pregnant.

10. Eggs

Eggs are an excellent food to add to anyone’s fertility diet. They’re filled with vitamin B, which is very important for fertility. Eggs are rich in protein as well and alongside numerous other nutrients, they also contain choline which reduces the risk of pregnancy issues.

11. Walnuts

Walnuts carry with them a lot of good fats which will help you maintain a healthy reproductive system. Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which among numerous other benefits do help with fertility as well. They’ve also got a little protein to them which helps. It doesn’t hurt to keep walnuts around for a snack.

12. Sunflower seeds

Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E which helps to improve fertility in men. Sunflower seeds are associated with increased sperm motility, increased sperm counts, and improving DNA fragmentation. Needless to say, a couple struggling to get pregnant is going to want to equip each partner with the foods they both need to maximize the chances of conceiving. Sunflower seeds are also packed with folate, selenium, zinc, and omega-3s.
